Rethinking the term “Solar Systems”

I had a really interesting discussion at work with my boss Vijay Modi and some colleagues about the real costs of an off-grid “solar” systems. The perception is often that solar panels make up the bulk of the cost of an off-grid system. The reality, however, with any time horizon over three years is that the cost of batteries will be the biggest determining factor of cost over time. It is for this reason, that Mark Hankin’s argues that off-grid system should not be called “solar systems” but rather battery-based systems.
If you consider that most off-grid systems in Africa fail after three years, this term is unfortunately even more appropriate.

Hi Matt,
Great article to high light some of the different cost components of the system. Just one comment - it seems that the battery size (and therefor cost) is very large in proportion to the solar panel size (and cost). A single 100W solar panel will produce in most regions of east and west Africa about 400W per day (assuming a solar insulation value of 4 to 5 hours). So if I assume a 50% depth of discharge of my battery (which would give me a life span of about 3 to 5 years) I would go with a 80 to 100Ah (1200 Watt capacity, 600Watt usable at 50% DOD) battery rather then a 200Ah battery. That would probably reduce the battery cost over a 20 year life span to less then 50% of the overall cost.
Otherwise right on the money!

Think your probably right and the charge controller could probably cost a bit less too. I think the concept still holds true though. Many solar systems in the field I’ve seen are so poorly managed, with discharges often going well past 50%. As a result, I think even a three year battery life is optimistic at times!

Good points raised here. I am grateful to you for that, however you deserve more thanks than that. I suffer from color blindness (deuteranopia in my case). I mainly use Opera browser (no idea if that changes anything), and a considerabland a number of web sites are challenging to comprehend thanks to a careless range of colours used. However, here, as the range of colors is good, the design is extremely tidy and pleasant to comprehend. I don’t know whether it was a premeditated and conscious undertaking, or just the ‘luck of the draw’, but I still thank you.

Woah, I think this post demonstrates a lot of what I have been thinking about for a while. On the one hand, I agree with most things you are mentioning yet nonetheless on the opposite viewpoint, can’t we possibly interpret these circumstances from the perspective of those individuals involved, as opposed to merely seeing it from our own small-minded view. Whatever particular area you visit in the world you will get certain things you like, and things you are not too fond of. The the most important plan of action is to simply accept it as it is and not to be sucked in to all the media hype which envelopes it. I honestly believe in this individual situation, that is exactly what has happened, although I could be wrong. I’d like very much to get others’ perspectives on this pressing issue. I really believe that Beyonce has been abused by both those around her and also the media. They have to leave her alone.

Carl had to take a trip to Phoenix but he didn’t have a car so I recommended a car rental that will help him. Since it was urgent, he had to do it. It didn’t spend him much though and he got to Phoenix fast. He was grateful of the idea and he thought about buying a car in the future. I keep thinking about our trip to Disney Land this summer. We don’t own a car but my father will rent one from a car rental near our place. He will be choosing a big one since there are a lot of us in the family. I’m sure we will have fun in the trip with the car he has picked.

We had a lovely trip with my family last weekend. We didn’t use our car but we just rented a car from a car rental since my husband uncomfortable of the obstacles we’d face. It was still fun because my husband was able to pick a good car. These are circumstances when car rentals can be beneficial.

I have a appointment with my dentist next week to have my braces removed . I am so excited because I have been having my braces for 2 years now. I can no longer recall how I really looked without my braces. I’m planning to have a hair cut after visiting the dentist to have a full make over of myself. I’ll be going to the dentist tomorrow to accompany my grandfather. He’s having problems with his false teeth because it keeps on coming off. Every time he chews or talks it would just unexpectedly come off and he finds it very upsetting. We’re planning to have his false teeth adjusted or maybe get him some new ones.

I have a appointment with my dentist next week to have my braces extracted. I am so excited because I have been wearing my braces for 2 years now. I can no longer remember how I really appear without my braces. I’m thinking to have a hair cut after visiting the dentist to have a full make over of myself. I’ll be visiting to the dentist tomorrow to go together with my grandfather. He’s having troubles with his false teeth because it never stops on coming off. whenever he chews or talks it would just suddenly come off and he finds it very upsetting. We’re considering to have his false teeth repaired or maybe get him some new ones.

I went to the dentist a few weeks ago to have my braces on. I’m still having problems in eating because of the wires. I also observed that I’m having a lot of cuts inside my mouth because of the wires and I consider it very inconvenient . When I was little I’ve always wanted to become a dentist. That’s the reason why I went to college to study dentistry. I’m currently in my sophomore year and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to pass in all the courses so that I can graduate soon enough and be able to do my dream profession. We were playing at the pool Saturday when I accidentally slipped and hit my face on the floor. I thought nothing was wrong when I noticed I lost my front tooth. It was shortly that I realized that my lip was full of blood because of the missing tooth. We immediately went to the dentist to get it repaired.

Virtually all I can think about is tobacco. I don’t wish to smoke and if perhaps anybody offered a smoke right this minute, I would definetly refuse. I am in a pretty horrible mood and have had trouble getting a good nights sleep yet I recognize I should always end up being resilient and strong. The e cigarettes may help me out in the long run.

I haven’t had a drag in over a year. The nastiest aspect about quiting smoking in considered the 1st month or so. you have to plug it into the usb port, when the transfer screen pops up X out of it. go to your shared folder and right click the song you want to transfer. then when the optios bar pops up choos transfer or move (depending on the operating system your computer has) and choose usb port or it may say something like extended storage or something of that sort. then it will ask if you are sure, click yes and it will transfer for you.

It’s an ISO file or CSO file that you downloaded. You must make a new folder on the root of your psp. Name it "ISO", then put your ISO/CSO files there. I had problem at first, but then I found out I must make a folder. Hope I help!
